Why psychology students fear statistics (and what actually helps)

Every year I watch capable students, students who can design a study, run participants, and write a beautiful introduction chapter, freeze at the same point: the analysis. Not because the mathematics is hard (software does the mathematics), but because of one decision: which test do I run?

The anxiety is about judgment, not numbers

Statistics anxiety in psychology students is well documented, and in my experience it rarely comes from arithmetic. It comes from the fear of being wrong in a way you can't detect, choosing a t-test when you needed Mann-Whitney, calling a paired design independent, reporting means for ordinal data. The stakes feel high because they are: your examiner will ask you to justify the choice.

What actually helps

  • Learning the decision, not the formulas. The six questions that pick a test (objective, DV type, groups, design, normality, special conditions) are learnable in an afternoon.
  • Classifying variables first. Nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio, half of test selection is automatic once this is solid.
  • Rehearsing the justification out loud. 'My DV was measured on an interval scale, my design was between-subjects…', a sentence you have said ten times cannot ambush you in a viva.
  • Practising on scenarios, not datasets. The skill being examined is recognising which situation you are in.
The viva is not a memory test. It is a conversation in which you demonstrate that your choices were reasoned.
